World War Z studio says Epic exclusivity 'is the best deal for players and developers'

Saber Interactive announced in December that its Left 4 Dead-ish survival-shooter World War Z would be released on the Epic Games Store rather than Steam. The non-Steam exclusivity was not met with universal acclaim—see the replies to this tweet for more on that—but CEO Matthew Karch said in a statement released today that despite the backlash, moving to Epic is "the best deal for players and developers."

"First of all, building games is costly, and so to receive 88% instead of 70% means we can invest more into making World War Z," he wrote. "Second, we're passing along much of the savings to you as gamers. The price of World War Z on the Epic Games store is being dropped to $34.99 starting now and continuing through our April 16 launch and beyond. Any players who have already pre-purchased the game for $39.99 will get the $5 refunded back to them. We are thrilled to be able to share the developer-friendly benefits of the Epic Games store with you all, and can’t wait for you to play our game."

Valve currently claims 30 percent of revenues from games sold on Steam, while Epic only takes a 12 percent cut from games sold on its store, which includes the five percent Unreal Engine royalty for games that use it. (You can read more about the differences between the two stores here.) That in itself isn't likely to spark a consumer revolution, but it can result in lower prices: Metro Exodus on the Epic Store, for instance, clocked in at $10 less than its original Steam listing in North America.

Not all gamers outside of North America were able to take advantage of the reduced price on Metro Exodus, however, and that may be the case for World War Z as well: It's currently going for £32 in the UK and €35 in Germany, which works out to $42 and $40 respectively. Karch confirmed that everyone who preordered at the $40 price will be issued a $5 refund.

I've reached out to Saber to ask if those prices will be adjusted, and will update if I receive a reply. World War Z is scheduled to come out on April 16.

Intel’s ‘KFC’ processor probably won’t come with a bucket of chicken

There is no taste test involved when evaluating the best CPU for gaming, and hopefully that's never the case. However, it does appear that Intel is readying a new processor that Colonel Sanders would approve of, at least in name.

Our friends at Anandtech found a reference to a new 'KFC' model of the Core i9-9900K while digging through the release notes of AIDA64 Extreme, a somewhat popular system identification and testing utility.

It remains to be seen if it will be offered in original and extra crispy variants, but either way, we don't suggest trying to shove it down your gullet. So, what exactly is the Core i9-9900KFC?

Intel uses the "K" designation for its processors that have unlocked multipliers, which makes them easier to overclock. The "F" designation is a recent addition to Intel's model naming scheme, and it indicates the processor lacks integrated graphics. For example, both the Core i9-9900K and Core i9-9900KF are 8-core/16-thread processors clocked at 3.6GHz to 5GHz, with 16MB of SmartCache. Both also have unlocked multipliers. However, the K model sports Intel UHD 630 graphics, and the KF model does not. This is where things get tricky. Intel previously applied the "C" designation to its Broadwell CPUs that had improved integrated graphics. That wouldn't apply to the KFC model, because the "F" tells us there is no IGP.

As Anandtech explains, "C" model Broadwell CPUs also contained a small amount of eDRAM to act as a buffer between the L3 cache and the CPU. This mainly benefited the integrated graphics on those parts. Nevertheless, it could indicate that the Core i9-9900KFC will have some eDRAM as well.

Or it could mean something entirely different that is yet to be revealed. Incidentally, this is not the first time that KFC and technology have crossed paths. Anyone remember this?We don't suspect there's any sort of collaboration going on here, but who knows. We've reached out to Intel and AIDA for comment and will update this article when/if we hear back

Far Cry New Dawn easter eggs reference Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, rabbids

A YouTuber called The Easter Egg Hunter has lived up to his name with a dive into the secrets hidden in Far Cry New Dawn. Ubisoft's post-apocalyptic follow-up to Far Cry 5 has a pretty goofy tone—this is the game that lets you have a wild pig as a companion, after all—and it's no surprise that extends to the easter eggs. They include Sam Fisher's outfit from Splinter Cell, a bobblehead version of Vaas from Far Cry 3, a bunch of photo mode poses that reference other Ubisoft games (the Assassin's Creed leap of faith is my favorite), and a poster for the rabbids that have become Ubisoft's weird mascots over multiple games.

If you're up for more, The Easter Egg Hunter has a video about Hitman 2 that highlights a lot of hidden stuff in that game. There's way more going on with the flamingo costume than I realized.

Frank's weapon choices are the .303 Huntsman rifle and dynamite.

Special ability: Dynamite Dash - A rush attack which sees enemies hit into the air and explode when they hit the ground.Gracie Braithwaite

A northern gal, Gracie is a British engineer blunt and straight-to-the-point nature contrasts with other members of the group. Nevertheless, she's an essential member of the team and works well as an operative.

Gracie's weapon choices include a double-barrel shotgun and grenades.

Special ability: Typhoon Snake - Enemies are dragged towards her and then used as an explosive projectile.

There's no confirmation on his set weapons, although from recently released images it appears that he will have a rifle, nor confirmation on his special ability.

Tropico 6 delayed - New release date revealed

Gamers expecting to rule multiple islands and (hopefully) be adored by their citizens will have to wait as simulation strategy Tropico 6 has been delayed.

Kalypso Media made the official announcement today (January 8th) that the game will now launch later than its expected release date of January 25th. The latest highly-anticipated game allows players to manage extensive archipelagos for the first time in the Tropico franchise - controlling multiple islands at the same time and adapting to various new challenges.

Players will also have to put their leadership and construction skills to the test by building bridges to connect your islands, and use new means of transportation and infrastructure. In an open letter to the Tropico community, Kalypso's Simon Hellwig said “Combining my own opinion and the response we had from thousands of dedicated beta players around the world, Kalypso has decided to postpone the release of the game for another couple of months to March 29th, 2019.”

If you pre-order Tropico 6 by 8pm (CET) on January 10th - via the official shop, Steam or other digital stores - you’ll receive the first DLC, due later this year, for free.

Also, if you pre-order the El Prez Edition of the game, you'll receive a customizable palace, as well as an exclusive soundtrack and items.
